Top 5 Inns for a Modern Rustic Wedding
By Mel Grau: Modern rustic weddings combine contemporary elegance with nostalgia for simpler times. Wisconsin is the ideal destination for this kind of unfussy fairy tale charm. To find a diamond in the rough—a pearl in the pastoral—look no further than these five Wisconsin inns.
Silver Poplar Studios, aka “Ellison Wonderland,” is the most offbeat location on this list. It’s got the history of Stout’s and the artsy tradition of Silver Star, but more Byelorussian folklore than any fairytale. Imagine walking into a storybook where the cottages are made from recycled material and the forest shares space with wildflowers. The property takes up 15 acres, with each unique structure a reclaimed and repurposed work of art. From convent windows, to a wooden barn silo, to plaster ornaments from a Chicago theater, this artist’s retreat unifies many stories into one inspiring concept. Much like a marital union, the estate symbolizes harmony.

CHICAGO LIFE Supplement
From: An irreverent Door County Survival Guide by Marianna Beck
Silver Poplar Studios — When you’ve decided to chuck the life of quiet desperation and explore your artistic side, one of the most extraordinary places to dance with your muse is Silver Poplar Studios. An artists’ retreat, tucked in one of the more remote parts of Door County (no t-shirt shops for miles!), painters, musicians and writers have sought inspiration in this peaceful setting since the 1940’s. Workshops, parties, and trunk shows are occasionally scheduled. Contact Carole and Jim Maronek at 920-854-2106.

By Bill Cochran: I found myself off the beaten track by staying in the woods at the north end of the peninsula. Hosts Jim and Carole Maronek have built a fantasy cottage of rustic memorabilia and authentic Russian artifacts and dubbed it the Firebird Guest House. It was a lovely place to retreat from the noise of the city and still the rushing of my mind.
